Zelenskyy intends to hold discussions with Trump during the margin of the UN General Assembly
The UN General Debate, scheduled for Tuesday in New York, is set to be an event of significant international importance, with around 150 heads of state and government expected to attend. Among them will be Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, and Donald Trump, the President of the United States.
This potential meeting between Trump and Zelensky in New York follows their last encounter at the White House in August, which took place after Trump's summit with Putin in Alaska.
According to reports, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has suggested a meeting between the two leaders during the UN General Debate. The discussions are said to focus on various matters, including security guarantees and sanctions against Russia, given Russia's ongoing attack on Ukraine, which has been waged for over three and a half years.
In addition to these political discussions, it is also expected that Olena Zelensky, the First Lady of Ukraine, and Melania Trump will discuss humanitarian issues related to children during their meeting.
Reports also suggest that the military burden for any potential security guarantees to Ukraine could mainly fall on European nations, with the United States, NATO countries, and a coalition of over 30 states known as the "Coalition of the Willing" also supporting Ukraine. However, it is noted that NATO countries avoid direct military involvement, instead focusing on providing weapons and defense systems.
The UN General Debate offers a platform for world leaders to discuss pressing global issues and work towards finding solutions. With the potential meeting between Trump and Zelensky, this year's debate promises to be an event of particular interest.
