Zelenskyy Heads to Chancellery for Discussions Prior to Trump-Putin Meeting
In an effort to advance a rapid and lasting peace in Ukraine, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is organising a virtual conference that will bring together Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump, along with other European leaders.
According to reports from security sources, the video conference on the Ukraine war is scheduled to take place at the Chancellery in Berlin in the afternoon. The preliminary discussions for the Trump-Putin summit are also expected to take place at the same venue.
President Zelensky is reportedly planning to travel to Berlin for the video conference. He is expected to participate in the discussions, joining forces with other world leaders to coordinate international efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump is also expected to participate in the consultations, starting from 3 pm. JD Vance, Donald Trump's Vice President, is also slated to take part in the discussions.
The video conference comes amidst Zelensky's calls for concrete global action and a lasting peace, and follows Trump's recent summit with Russian President Putin, which signaled potential for a quick peace deal. European leaders have also been pressing for a ceasefire before any formal negotiations.
By facilitating this high-level meeting, Merz aims to strengthen Zelensky's position and build consensus on the next steps to de-escalate the war and promote stability in the region.
After the initial consultations involving the Americans, virtual consultations of the Europeans without the Americans are planned. The consultations for the Ukraine issue are scheduled to start at 2 pm.
The upcoming video conference is a significant step towards bringing world leaders together to discuss a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The focus will be on a unified and concrete response against Russian aggression and potential security guarantees for Ukraine.
