Zelensky's Frustration Over Insufficient US Pressure on Russia

- Zelenskyy expresses disappointment over insufficient U.S. pressure towards Russia

For weeks, US President Donald Trump has been struggling to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine's ongoing conflict, which has plagued the region for over three years now. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has joined forces, calling for relentless pressure on Russia to halt its attacks and establish an immediate truce.

"Enough is enough! Russia's assaults must cease immediately," Macron asserted via an online platform. He emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and stern action if Russia continues to stall peace negotiations.

Trump's attempts to reach a ceasefire have met numerous challenges, with the Kremlin adamantly rejecting any arrangement without preconditions. Additionally, the US-Russia relationship has been warming under Trump's administration, raising concerns about the level of pressure that can realistically be exerted on Moscow.

Aggressive Russian forces have been penetrating Ukraine relentlessly. According to the Ukrainian air force, Russian forces launched 23 cruise or ballistic missiles and 109 drones towards neighboring Ukraine overnight.

Behind the Scenes

The US and Russia have been engaging in closed-door talks, with representatives meeting in Saudi Arabia. The discussions have centered around a phased ceasefire in Ukraine, focusing on energy and infrastructure targets as an initial step towards achieving a complete and lasting peace [1][2]. Both leaders acknowledge the potential economic benefits and geopolitical stability that could stem from improved U.S.-Russia relations once peace is established.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, has expressed skepticism regarding Putin's commitment to peace, pushing for concrete actions instead of just hollow words. Additionally, Zelensky questions the trustworthiness of Putin, stating that any ceasefire should be mechanically enforced rather than relying solely on Russian compliance [1][2].

European leaders, such as Macron, advocate for maintaining or increasing pressure on Russia to halt its aggression in Ukraine, contrasting with Trump's approach, which focuses on swiftly improving U.S.-Russia relations and achieving a peaceful resolution.

The recent US policy shift towards reestablishing ties with Russia complicates matters further. Despite ongoing discussions around a ceasefire, Russian aggression persists, with recent explosions in Kyiv occurring just hours after Trump and Putin's phone call [2].
