Putin Ready for Zelensky Dialogue, Conditions Apply
Russia's President Putin indicates openness for talks with Ukraine's leader Zelensky, proposing a conclusive discussion stage. - Zelenskyy could potentially engage in final discussions with Putin, as the latter indicates readiness for a meeting.
Vladimir Putin has expressed readiness for a face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but with certain conditions attached. According to Putin, the meeting can take place only during the "end game" of negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations.
During a conversation with foreign media representatives, including the news agency AFP in Saint Petersburg, Putin expressed his willingness to engage with Zelensky to find a solution that ends the conflict between the two countries and prevents future similar situations.
However, Putin has concerns about Zelensky's legitimacy to sign a peace agreement. He claimed that Zelensky's five-year term ended last year, a statement that Kyiv rejected in the past. Putin also warned that the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine by Germany would negatively impact German-Russian relations and have no effect on Russia's military offensive against Kyiv.
Germany has no plans to supply Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles, which are capable of hitting targets 500 kilometers away and, thus, would enable Ukraine to attack targets deep within Russian territory. Meanwhile, Ukraine has rejected a Russian proposal for a 100-day ceasefire and emphasized that a ceasefire is a crucial first step towards achieving peace.
Since taking office, Zelensky has been actively seeking diplomatic solutions, meeting with various world leaders, such as during his recent visit to The Hague. However, he will not be attending the official NATO summit.
Interestingly, Putin's insistence on the legitimacy of the authorities signing a peace agreement has been a recurring theme in ongoing negotiations. The Kremlin's goal appears to be discrediting Zelensky as an "illegitimate" leader, a claim that has been echoed by some international figures despite the legal and practical challenges Ukraine faces during wartime.
It seems that the intricate dance of military conflict, diplomacy, and power politics will continue until a resolution is reached. Stay tuned for more updates on the developing situation.
