Zelenskyy calls upon Russia to take action for war's end, in anticipation of Trump-Putin meeting
The August 2025 Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has not resulted in a significant breakthrough in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
During the summit, Trump emphasized that any potential territorial exchanges between Russia and Ukraine must come from Ukraine, a stance that Ukraine strongly opposes. The Kremlin announced that Trump would greet Putin at his plane upon arrival in Alaska, and the location of the meeting was confirmed as Alaska.
In the days following the summit, Russian President Putin demanded territorial annexations in eastern Ukraine (Donbas) and Ukrainian cession of Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in response, called for an end to the war in a social media post.
Despite Zelenskyy’s call for direct talks with Putin as a way forward and US backing for these negotiations, Russia remains reluctant and has walked back some early expectations about meeting Zelenskyy soon.
Zelenskyy secured US support for direct talks with Putin but no concrete deal to end the war was achieved during his meeting with President Trump and European leaders in Washington. There was unity among the US, Ukraine, and European partners against any pressure on Ukraine to give up territory, but substantive progress or a ceasefire has not yet happened.
Meanwhile, military aid from Western countries including the US is ongoing to strengthen Ukraine’s defense. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces were deploying reinforcements to eastern Ukraine, particularly around the mining hub of Dobropillia in the Donetsk region.
In summary, the Alaska summit initiated dialogue but Russia’s conditions are unacceptable to Ukraine. Zelenskyy secured US and European backing for direct negotiations with Putin but no peace deal was reached. Russia shows reluctance to engage meaningfully in talks, contradicting earlier statements. Military aid to Ukraine persists, indicating ongoing conflict despite diplomatic efforts. This reflects a fragile diplomatic situation with no immediate resolution following the August 2025 meetings.
