Donald Trump Calls for Unconditional Ceasefire Between Russia and Ukraine as Negotiations Commence

Zelenskyy and Trump hold a phone discussion about the prospect of imposing a truce in the conflict - Zelenskyy and Trump engage in a discussion concerning a potential truce.

Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader, urges Moscow to demonstrate sincerity in ending the conflict by initiating an unconditional truce. In response, Trump advocates for a 30-day ceasefire, expressing the sentiment on his Truth Social platform. He warns that additional sanctions will ensue if the ceasefire terms are not met.

It's been suggested that Trump could end the Ukraine war in 24 hours, an assertion made before his presidency. Upon reaching the White House, he swiftly sought dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, sparking international controversy.

Recent expressions of frustration from Trump towards both Zelensky and Putin indicate the elusive nature of a lasting ceasefire. However, Trump reiterates his commitment to achieving a swift and lasting peace. Nevertheless, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hints at potential shifting focus if progress remains stagnant.

Next week, Trump is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia. Previous talks among US, Russian, and Ukrainian representatives in the region resulted in hopes for a ceasefire, albeit without a breakthrough. When asked about a surprise meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia, Trump voiced uncertainty, although he acknowledged that discussions have been productive.

Interestingly, a full, unconditional 30-day ceasefire has been proposed by Ukraine, potentially commencing on May 12, 2025. The European Union backs this proposal and emphasizes the ceasefire's implementation without preconditions. At the same time, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stresses readiness for the truce contingent on Russian agreement and effective monitoring.

Trump has been actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, participating in discussions with key European leaders and Zelenskyy regarding the ceasefire and ensuing peace talks. In March 2025, the United States proposed an immediate, limited 30-day truce, which Ukraine accepted, although Russia has yet to agree to the broader terms.

Notably, European leaders from France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom have recently visited Ukraine to demonstrate support and press for agreement on the truce and subsequent negotiations. They also coordinate plans with Ukraine for a potential "coalition of the willing" to support Ukraine's forces post-peace deal, potentially including peacekeeping troops.

While the drive towards ceasefire negotiations, in which Trump plays a significant role, seems promising, the situation remains contingent on Russia's acceptance and adherence.
