In a significant turn of events, President Volodymyr Zelensky and former President Donald Trump have discussed the possibility of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

To kick-start peace negotiations, Zelensky emphasized the need for Russia to show sincerity by enforcing an unconditional ceasefire first. In a stride, Trump followed suit, advocating for a ceasefire within a 30-day timeframe, as declared on his Truth Social platform. Should the ceasefire not materialize, the USA and its partners threaten to impose additional sanctions.

As per Zelensky, the conversation with Trump delved into the resource agreement between Ukraine and the USA. This long-negotiated and recently amended agreement, ratified by the Ukrainian parliament, focuses on jointly exploiting oil, gas, and minerals in Ukraine.

Initially, Kyiv had hoped for a security guarantee from the USA in exchange for preferential access to Ukrainian resources. However, Washington declined this proposition. Nevertheless, the agreement ultimately signed is considered a diplomatic victory for Kyiv.

The ceasefire proposal has garnered significant support from Ukraine's allies, major European countries, and the European Union. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wholeheartedly supports the ceasefire as a step towards peace negotiations. However, she has also issued a stern warning of intensified sanctions on Russia if the ceasefire is breached.

The proposed ceasefire, tied to a peace plan associated with Trump, faces concerns about its feasibility and fairness. Critics view the plan as highly questionable, seemingly biased towards Russia. For the ceasefire and peace talks to succeed, Trump must effectively pressurize Russian President Vladimir Putin to abide by the terms. There are indications that Trump’s stance may shift due to recent developments, such as the mineral deal with Ukraine and mounting criticism over Russian attacks on civilians.

However, despite the proposed ceasefire, violations persist. Russia declared a unilateral three-day ceasefire, but Ukraine reported continual breaches by Russian forces. Both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire around strategically important locations like Novopavlivka and Kurakhove, with ongoing fighting and Russian advances reported in some areas.

In conclusion, while Ukraine and its allies are prepped for a 30-day full ceasefire and endeavor to advance towards peace negotiations, the success hinges on Russia’s agreement and stringent enforcement. The international community, including the EU and Ukraine’s partners, endorse the ceasefire, but doubts linger over Russia’s readiness to comply and the ceasefire’s sustainability. The dialogue between Zelensky and Trump seems to have helped consolidate allied leaders’ efforts, but it remains to be seen whether it will significantly change the dynamics with Moscow.
