Zelenskyy and the EU advise Trump against land exchange during his upcoming meeting with Putin.
In recent developments, discussions surrounding potential US-Russia land swap agreements involving Ukraine and the European Union (EU) have gained significant attention. These talks revolve around the possibility of a ceasefire or peace deal, where parts of Ukrainian territory currently controlled or claimed by Russia might be exchanged or conceded.
One of the key contentious regions in these discussions is the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts and has seen intense fighting. Russia currently occupies or claims about 20% of Ukrainian territory, with the Donbas region being a significant part of this.
These developments have unfolded amid high-level negotiations involving US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as various European leaders. European leaders express concerns mainly because such land swaps might undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, complicate EU security dynamics, and set contentious precedents in international conflict resolution.
However, detailed public information on EU official positions or direct involvement in negotiating land swaps remains limited. What is clear, though, is that Ukraine and the EU are urging President Trump not to make any land swap agreements with President Putin without the involvement of Brussels and Kyiv.
In a twist, President Trump has suggested that both Kyiv and Moscow would need to cede land, an idea neither side has previously accepted. Trump has also hinted that he may not be physically present during the potential negotiations between Zelenskyy and Putin, suggesting that the talks could occur without his direct involvement.
Despite this, Trump has pledged to end the three-year war in Ukraine and has suggested that a deal is near. However, his criticisms of Zelenskyy's resistance to land swaps have been firm, with Trump stating that he "very, very severely disagrees" with the Ukrainian leader.
On the other hand, Zelenskyy has vowed not to cede land to Russia and has stressed that altering Ukraine's 1991 borders is unconstitutional. He has also warned that Russia is preparing for further offensives, not peace.
In a joint statement on 9 August, several countries and the European Commission reiterated their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. They stressed that the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine's involvement.
As of August 2025, these negotiations continue, with considerable uncertainty about the final outcomes or agreements. Notably, Putin has so far refused to meet Zelenskyy after the Alaska summit, casting a shadow over the prospects of a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy.
