The much-anticipated USA-Russia summit held in Alaska in August 2025 did not result in an immediate ceasefire or peace agreement on Ukraine. However, the meeting has set the stage for potential further negotiations, including planned meetings involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The summit has significantly affected the diplomatic trajectory, shifting the focus towards accelerating negotiations and arranging direct talks involving Zelenskyy rather than just US-Russia discussions. Former US President Trump announced intentions for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, followed by a tripartite summit with Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy to discuss peace.

However, Russian officials have been reluctant, pushing back on the timing and nature of such talks. The Kremlin remains skeptical, suggesting only lower-level talks might occur at this stage, reflecting Putin's position that Russia aims to continue the conflict under current terms.

The Ukrainian government, which has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for over three years with Western support, has emphasized the importance of Zelenskyy's involvement in the decision-making process. Trump has advocated direct talks rather than preliminary ceasefire steps.

Despite these efforts, the differing positions of the US (pushing for direct peace talks including Ukraine’s leadership) and Russia (demanding Ukrainian recognition of Russian control in parts of Donbas and delaying high-level dialogue) complicate the process.

Zelensky has ruled out decisions on Ukraine being made at the summit. He expressed confidence that there will be a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and himself in the future. The Ukrainian President hopes US President Donald Trump is aware of this.

Trump, for his part, has stated earlier this week that he will not sign any agreement on the Ukraine conflict with Putin, as it's not his role to do so. The planned summit between Trump and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is scheduled to take place in the US state of Alaska on Friday.

The European allies of Ukraine and its leadership in Kyiv fear that Putin and Trump could make decisions over the country attacked by Russia. Zelensky stated that no decisions about Ukraine can be made without Ukraine's involvement.

The upcoming summit between Trump and Putin is considered important for their bilateral relations, according to Zelensky. Despite the uncertain breakthrough, the summit marks a significant step towards more inclusive talks with Ukraine represented.
