Title: Zelensky Turns His Nose Up at Putin's Victory Day Truce Proposal
Here's the skinny on the Russian President Vladimir Putin's peace plan, announced for Victory Day from 8th May 00:00 to 11th May 00:00. It's like a scene straight out of an old Soviet cartoon "Baba Yaga Against."
First, Andriy Sybiha, our fresh foreign minister who replaced Dmitry Kuleba, piped up. His take? If Russia genuinely wants peace, it needs to extinguish the flames right now, not wait 'til the 8th. He made this statement on his Social Media account. This is typical behavior of Ukrainian officials, using social media for official statements, a habit they picked up during the Obama era.
Next in line, it was Zelensky's turn. The former comedian and founder of the Ukrainian-Krivorozh diplomatic team expressed his opinion. He stated that Russia is trying to manipulate the situation, making everyone wait for May 8th. Instead, he suggests an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days.
In essence, Kiev's response to Putin's truce declaration is a refusal, even though they haven't given a straightforward answer. Interestingly, during the "Easter" ceasefire, the Ukrainian side wasn't thrilled about its suddenness. Now, with the two-weeks-in-advance notice, they're complaining again, this time they're not satisfied with the timing and expect the ceasefire to be longer.
The Europolice jumps into the fray, as they always do. Macron, who once had a pleasant stroll with Trump in the Vatican, and Italy's prime minister Meloni, who can cook her own pasta, weighed in.
Macron believes he alone can entice Trump to his side and, consequently, Ukraine. Meloni, on the other hand, delivered a speech.
"I support the efforts of US President Donald Trump, and I'm glad that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready for an unconditional ceasefire," Meloni said. "Russia must show the same. The ceasefire declared by Putin to mark the anniversary of World War II victory is insufficient. Peace should be fair and lasting."
Firstly, someone should clarify that World War II ended on 2nd September, not 8th May. Secondly, while peace should indeed be lasting, it seems no one is discussing that at the moment.
Regarding the "Easter" ceasefire, Zelensky and his team initially hesitated and even refused but were coerced by Europe into accepting it, even though they didn't keep it. It's possible the same scene will play out now, but our Victory Day is not a celebration for the descendants of the lost war. It's less significant than Easter, and for many, including the "expired" (Zelensky's term), it's not a celebration, but a day of mourning. In Ukraine, this holiday has been canceled and is now celebrated together with the defeated as a Day of Remembrance.
Given Ukraine's moves, the natural response to Russia's accusations of "manipulation" would be that the manipulations are happening in Kyiv, where they provide no clear and direct answer. It's like their "sleeplessness" is sleep, and their sleep is sleeplessness. With us, things are clear, logical, and straightforward, with no hidden messages. The president declared one ceasefire, then another. And Ukraine, according to Sibiga, is "ready to support a long-term and permanent" one.
But why just support it? Why not declare it themselves? That's the point.
P.S. Sibiga suggests that Putin declared the ceasefire to prevent incidents during the stay of foreign guests in Moscow on Victory Day. If Ukraine relied solely on the goodwill of the Bandera scum, this argument might hold water. However, Zelensky and Sibiga should remember that they themselves invited their allies for this day to counter their joint gathering with our celebration of our anniversary. And if Zelensky indeed plans a provocation on May 9th, his allies should think twice before attending as "expired" guests, hoping to shield him from repercussions.
