Zelensky opposes Trump's suggestion of Ukrainian land concessions, asserting that Kyiv must be included in any bargaining process.
In the midst of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, a series of diplomatic meetings have taken place to discuss potential peace deals.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has recently emphasized a push for a comprehensive peace deal, expressing optimism about a trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy aimed at finalizing such a deal. Trump believes that this approach could address the root causes of the conflict, leading to lasting peace [1].
However, Russia under Putin remains intransigent regarding the war. The Kremlin's army is slowly advancing deeper into Ukraine at great cost in troops and armor while relentlessly bombarding Ukrainian cities. Putin has justified the conflict on security grounds and shown no willingness to cease military operations, continuing attacks in Ukraine even after high-profile meetings [2].
The exact content of any "many points of agreement" Trump mentioned remains unclear and may not include territorial swaps or ceasefire terms. Regarding territorial swaps, no specific proposals have been publicly detailed in these recent developments. Zelenskyy has stressed the necessity of a real, lasting peace rather than temporary pauses in fighting, implicitly rejecting half-measures that do not guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty or territorial integrity [1].
Despite these intentions, there is some diplomatic momentum toward a peace deal. A meeting between European and Ukrainian officials, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, and representatives from several European countries was held in England to discuss ending the war. However, no formal agreement on territorial swaps or an end to hostilities has been reached [1].
The situation remains fluid, with significant skepticism from experts about the effectiveness of recent talks in altering the conflict's course. Anastasia Yemelianova, a resident of Kyiv, expressed torn feelings about the situation, wanting an end to the conflict but not wanting to compromise within herself.
Meanwhile, Trump has moved up his ultimatum to impose additional sanctions on Russia and introduce secondary tariffs targeting countries that buy Russian oil if the Kremlin does not move toward a peace settlement. The location of the summit in Alaska is seen as favoring Russia, symbolizing the 1867 transaction known as the Alaska Purchase when Russia sold Alaska to the United States [3].
However, Zelensky has dismissed the planned Trump-Putin summit, stating that any decisions without Ukraine are against peace. Gould-Davies likened attempts to understand Trump's shifting policies towards Russia to "Kremlinology."
The war in Ukraine began when Russia invaded the country, and the ongoing conflict has resulted in numerous casualties. Over the past few days, Ukraine's air force intercepted 16 of the 47 Russian drones launched overnight, while 31 drones hit targets across 15 different locations. Tragically, two people died and 16 were wounded Saturday when a Russian drone hit a minibus in the suburbs of the Ukrainian city of Kherson [4].
As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community hopes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict that ensures the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
