Ukraine Synchs Up Sanctions Against Russia: Spotlight on Zelensky's Decision

President Volodymyr Zelensky's signature on a decree aligns Ukraine's sanctions against Russia with those of international partners, marking a significant move in the ongoing conflict.

The decree enacts the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) decision from June 27, 2025, titled 'On the synchronization of Ukraine, the European Union, and other participants of the G7's sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation and related entities.'

"In accordance with Article 107 of the Constitution of Ukraine, I hereby decree: to implement the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine of June 27, 2025," the decree declares.

This action requires partner countries' sanctions to be implemented within Ukraine's jurisdiction no later than 15 days after coming into force. The Cabinet of Ministers, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the National Bank have been tasked with this implementation.

The Security Service, together with the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Office of the Prosecutor General, must work to synchronize Ukraine's sanctions with the EU, USA, and other countries imposed due to Russia's armed aggression.

Zelensky announced on June 19 that Ukraine would synchronize sanctions with its partners and boost pressure on Russia's energy sector. However, the EU has faced difficulties in reaching an agreement on the 18th round of sanctions against Russia, with Slovakia potentially delaying or even vetoing the package.

Ukraine's move to synchronize sanctions aims for "maximum harsh consequences for the Russian Federation for the criminal and unprovoked war against Ukraine and further significant restriction of the aggressor state's military-industrial potential."
