Zelensky calls upon associates to encourage a shift in power in Russia
In recent months, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has taken a turn for the worse, with increased deadly aerial assaults by Moscow's forces. The Kremlin has made the capture of the Donetsk region a priority, claiming the industrial region as part of Russia in September 2022.
The latest escalation occurred in Kiev, Ukraine's capital, where a missile strike on a nine-story residential building reduced part of the building to rubble. The attack claimed the lives of seven people, including a 6-year-old boy, according to authorities. Rescuers were seen scouring through a smoldering mound of broken concrete at the scene of the strike.
In a separate incident, between late July 30 and early yesterday, Russia fired over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles at Ukraine, with Kiev being the main target. Another attack on the strategically important town of Chasiv Yar in the eastern Donetsk region was also reported. Moscow claimed to have captured Chasiv Yar, a military hub for Ukrainian forces, but this claim was rejected by Ukrainian army spokesperson Viktor Tregubov, who called it "lies."
The Defense Ministry of Russia, however, stated that Chasiv Yar was "liberated by Russian forces." Control of Chasiv Yar would mark a major military boon for Russia, paving the way for Russian forces to advance on remaining civilian strongholds in the eastern Donetsk region.
The war has entered a war of attrition phase, with neither side achieving decisive breakthroughs in recent months. The conflict continuously strains Ukraine’s resilience and its partners’ support.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged allies for regime change in Russia, fearing that if the world does not aim to change the regime in Russia, Moscow will still try to destabilize neighboring countries, even after the war ends.
In a bid to halt the invasion, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a 10-day ultimatum for Russia to halt its invasion, now in its fourth year. Speaking virtually, Zelensky said he believed Russia could be "pushed" to stop the war.
The intensified fighting in eastern Ukraine, particularly near places like Chasiv Yar, and the persistent Russian use of occupied areas as launch points for drone strikes, along with the ongoing global strategic tensions, maintain fears of escalation. However, major ground battles are generally described farther east.
