In a move that has sparked controversy and concern, US President Donald Trump announced a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. The potential deal between the two leaders may involve a swap of territories between Russia and Ukraine, causing alarm in Ukraine and skepticism in Europe.

The proposed territorial swap, as suggested by former US President Donald Trump, would see Russia gaining control over Ukraine's eastern and southeastern regions, including the full Donbas area (Luhansk and Donetsk), as well as possibly freezing front lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. This would grant Moscow possession of resource-rich and agriculturally vital territories, rich in lithium, coal, gas, and other critical minerals.

Ukraine, represented by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has firmly rejected any such proposal. Zelenskyy insists on retaining all Ukrainian territory under constitutional principles, refuses to relinquish parts of Donbas, and rejects the idea of surrendering territory that remains under Ukrainian control. He views surrendering these lands as enabling future Russian aggression.

In Europe, the proposal is viewed critically due to concerns that allowing Russia control over these fertile and resource-rich Ukrainian territories would amount to stealing critical minerals and key economic assets, further empowering Russia economically and strategically.

Russia, for its part, is pushing to solidify control over these territories, with Russian President Vladimir Putin calling for full control of Donbas and a long-term settlement favoring the Kremlin's strategic interests rather than a temporary ceasefire.

| Party | Reception of Proposed Territorial Swap | |-------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------| | Russia | Supports full control over Donbas and resource-rich regions; seeks a long-term settlement favoring Kremlin interests[2] | | Ukraine | Firmly rejects any surrender of territory; considers it unconstitutional and a security risk[1][2] | | Europe | Concerns about loss of strategic and resource-rich lands to Russia; sees it as economic theft and geopolitical risk[1] |

As the Putin-Trump summit approaches, there are fears that Kyiv and Europe could be sidelined, with Ukraine facing the dilemma of accepting a potentially humiliating and destructive deal or going it alone, unsure of the backing of European states.

In response, leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission issued a joint statement demanding robust and credible security guarantees for Ukraine. They stated that the path to peace cannot be decided without Ukraine and any diplomatic solution must protect Ukraine and Europe's vital security interests.

Zelenskyy, in a show of unity, said the end of the war must be fair and he is grateful to those standing with Ukraine for the sake of peace in Ukraine. He also emphasized that any decisions taken without Ukraine will be "stillborn" and unworkable.

The impending Putin-Trump summit has revived fears that the two leaders could align to cut a deal that would be deeply disadvantageous to Kyiv. However, the White House is open to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attending the summit, but preparations are currently for a bilateral meeting with Putin.

Meanwhile, Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin analyst, suggested a potential territorial swap could involve Russia handing over 1,500sq km to Ukraine and obtaining 7,000sq km. However, western military analysts report that Russia took only about 500sq km of territory in July.

As the world watches, the future of Ukraine hangs in the balance, with the fate of its territory and its people uncertain. The Putin-Trump summit in Alaska could shape the course of history for years to come.
