Billboard Battle: Orban's Campaign Against Ukraine's Zelenskyy Sparks Controversy

Zelensky accuses Orban of committing "significant historical errors"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called out Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán over a contentious billboard campaign. Zelenskyy sees the campaign as a smear tactic that Orbán will regret, and a "historical mistake".

The Billboard Debacle

"He's using me for his election campaign," Zelenskyy said, expressing his displeasure with Orbán using his likeness in the billboard campaign against Ukraine's EU membership. The billboards, which have been visible in Hungarian cities for weeks, protest aid for Ukraine and purport that such aid would drag the country into conflict and damage its economy. The billboards also feature portraits of Zelenskyy.

A Grave Misstep

According to Zelenskyy, Orbán's policies are anti-Ukrainian in nature and serve to further radicalize and anti-Ukrainian sentiment within Hungarian society. In an interview with Hungarian news portal valaszonline.hu, Zelenskyy stated that by refusing to support Ukraine, Orbán is inadvertently aiding Vladimir Putin.

Political Battlefield

The ongoing feud unfolds in the lead-up to Hungary's next parliamentary elections, scheduled for early 2026. Orbán, who has been in power since 2010, is under pressure for the first time as he faces a serious contender in new liberal-conservative Tisza party leader Peter Magyar.

In an escalation of the political tensions, an alleged spy working for Ukraine was arrested in Hungary in May. This individual is believed to be close to Magyar. Earlier this year, two Ukrainians of Hungarian heritage were arrested by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), suspected of spying for Hungarian military intelligence. More evidence in this case hasn't been made public.
