Dresden's Self-Painted Zebra Crossing Closure Sparks Outcry

A self-painted zebra crossing in Dresden, near several schools and day-care centers, has been closed by the city council, leaving schoolchildren and residents with a much longer and potentially dangerous route to cross the street [1].

The closure, which was first reported by the "Bild" newspaper, has been met with criticism from local residents and parents, particularly Stefan Kraft, the chairman of the Dresden Parents' Council. Kraft described the closure as a "farce of all farces," as there is no safe crossing option now [1].

The zebra crossing, which was functioning before its closure, had become a popular choice for students of the nearby Heinrich-Schütz Conservatory. It gained more traffic since the nearby Carola Bridge collapsed, increasing the urgency for a proper crossing [1].

Miriam Lehmann, from the Schütz Conservatory parents' representation, finds the current situation intolerable, with over 5,000 children attending the conservatory weekly [1]. Lehmann believes a traffic light for the crossing is the best solution, but the city has not responded yet [1].

Kraft agrees, stating that the existing traffic island is insufficient for clear signaling to drivers about pedestrian or cyclist priority. He also mentioned that a zebra crossing is cheaper than a traffic light, especially in maintenance [1].

However, the city administration of Dresden maintains that a median strip is sufficient instead of a zebra crossing or traffic light. The city has not provided further information on the case so far [1].

Residents and affected parties are hoping for either a legal zebra crossing or a traffic light to be installed. They argue that the current situation poses a risk to the safety of the city's children and residents [1].

The closure of Dresden's self-painted zebra crossing, a significant route for students from the Heinrich-Schütz Conservatory especially with the collapse of the Carola Bridge, has ignited a heated debate about community and employment policies. The employment policy decision by the city council to close the crossing without providing a safe alternative is perceived as irresponsible, potentially endangering thousands of children and residents. Local sports enthusiasts, including football teams that often use the crossing, are also affected by this employment policy decision.
