Zaydrius Rainey-Sale’s triumphant return lifts UW Huskies’ defense in 2025
The University of Washington Huskies have welcomed back linebacker Zaydrius Rainey-Sale, who has bolstered their linebacker corps after recovering from a season-ending knee injury. Coach Ryan Walters has praised Rainey-Sale's advanced processing and retention skills, noting his ability to recall and execute adjustments from film study.
Rainey-Sale, a true freshman, chose UW due to coach Jedd Fisch's reputation for playing true freshmen and to stay close to his family in Tacoma. He played at Bethel High School before his move to UW. After suffering his injury on Nov. 1, 2024, Rainey-Sale made his college football debut on Oct. 10, 2025, during the Huskies' win against Rutgers.
In his three games back, Rainey-Sale has contributed significantly. He has four tackles and two pass breakups. His hit on wide receiver Hank Beatty directly led to senior cornerback Tacario Davis' interception during UW's win against Illinois on Oct. 25, 2025. With injuries thinning the linebacker corps, Rainey-Sale's return has been a significant boost for the Huskies.
Rainey-Sale, a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings, is expected to play a majority of the linebacker snaps against Wisconsin on Oct. 31, 2025. His advanced skills and eagerness to play have made him a valuable addition to the UW Huskies.
