Zaporizhzhia experiences bombings and smokes emissions, as reported by MAGATEE
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine has been the subject of concern due to ongoing military conflict in the region. On August 2, 2025, an auxiliary facility located approximately 1200 meters from the plant's perimeter was targeted by drone and shelling attacks.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an international organization that promotes peace, cooperation, and the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technologies, reported hearing explosions and seeing smoke from the attacked location.
Although the main nuclear plant has not been directly hit, these attacks in the vicinity pose significant risks to nuclear safety. The IAEA's head, Rafael Grossi, emphasized that military activity near nuclear facilities is extremely dangerous and called for maximum military restraint to prevent a nuclear accident.
The auxiliary facility appears to be related but separate from the main plant infrastructure. There have been no recent reports indicating a direct hit to the nuclear reactors or spent fuel storage. However, the proximity of drone strikes and shelling continues to present potential hazards, including fires or damage leading to radioactive release.
These drone attacks against nearby facilities represent a continuing threat to nuclear safety at Zaporizhzhia and underscore the need for heightened international monitoring and restraint. As of early August 2025, no direct damage to the nuclear reactors has been reported.
The ZNPP, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, is currently under the control of Russian forces, according to Ukrainian authorities. The incidents at the ZNPP over the past weeks and months highlight potential threats to nuclear safety during a military conflict.
