Zakk Wylde discusses the creation of his distinctive "Grail" Les Paul Custom's bullseye design, which became his signature style.
In the heart of New Jersey, at Garden State Music, a significant exchange took place. Scott Quinn, a local music aficionado, parted ways with a Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar, trading it with none other than Zakk Wylde, a rising star in the world of rock and metal.
This particular Les Paul Custom would become one of the most iconic electric guitars in modern rock/metal history. Known as "The Grail," it played a pivotal role in Wylde's career, particularly during his tenure with Ozzy Osbourne.
The guitar, with its cream-and-black bullseye graphic finish, stood out visually and sonically as a unique signature instrument. However, the bullseye finish was not what Wylde originally intended. He had hoped for a design inspired by the poster of the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo, featuring circles, to distinguish his look from Randy Rhoads, Ozzy's previous guitarist, who played an Alpine White Les Paul Custom.
Despite the refinishing shop's mix-up, the distinctive bullseye finish quickly became iconic and closely associated with Wylde’s image during the No More Tears era. The bullseye motif later evolved into a leitmotif for Wylde’s signature guitars, reinforcing his personal brand and making the look as recognizable as his playing style.
Wylde was astounded by the sound and playability of the Gibson Les Paul Custom when he first played it. The active EMG pickups contributed to his aggressive playing style, making it instrumental in writing and recording some of Ozzy's biggest tracks in that period. The guitar became inseparable from Wylde's identity as a guitarist.
Zakk Wylde acquired the Gibson Les Paul Custom from his friend Scott Quinn, who, unfortunately, the details about his double-neck guitar trade are unknown. Nevertheless, the impact of the Les Paul Custom on Wylde's career and the world of rock and metal remains undeniable.
