Zakhar Prilepin's Controversial Film Fails to Draw Audiences Despite Heavy Backing
Zakhar Prilepin's controversial movie, a nearly three-hour thriller about 'threats from Western liberalism and tolerance', has had a disappointing box office run. Despite increased funding from the Ministry of Culture and additional backing from the 'New Century' bank, linked to producer and composer Viktor Drobysh, the movie's earnings have been meagre.
The movie, featuring Russian actors Mikhail Politsyn, Sergei Chonishvili, and Mikhail Gorevoy, was shot in Vyborg over the summer and fall of 2023. Its budget is estimated to be at least 200 million rubles (around $2.38 million). However, the box office earnings have been far from covering even a single day's shooting expenses for one actor.
In its opening four days, the movie collected a mere 76,000 rubles (about $950) with 192 viewers. Over the next two weeks, the numbers barely improved, with only 118 visitors and around $400 in earnings.
The movie, which had its world premiere in 2023, has struggled to attract audiences despite its high-profile backing. With such low box office returns, it remains to be seen whether the movie will recoup its substantial production costs.
