The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for the new NHL season, but not without some significant changes to their forward group. One of the most notable absences will be that of forward Zach Hyman, who is expected to be out for a few months due to a wrist injury.

Hyman, a key player for the Oilers, sustained the injury on May 27 against the Dallas Stars during the playoffs. He had surgery the day after the injury and initially, there was a vague yet hopeful update about his status. However, on Thursday, coach Kris Knoblauch announced Hyman's extended absence.

Hyman's absence adds more questions to the Oilers' forward group, which has already lost several veterans in the offseason, including Corey Perry, Connor Brown, Evander Kane, Viktor Arvidsson, and Jeff Skinner.

To fill the void, the Oilers have signed a new winger, Andrew Mangiapane. Mangiapane, a one-time 35-goal scorer, comes to the Oilers after having the worst statistical season of his career with the Washington Capitals.

On a positive note, the Oilers have also added David Tomasek to their roster. Tomasek, who led the Swedish Hockey league in scoring, is a newcomer to the NHL. He played for Swedish Hockey before joining the Oilers and is expected to make a significant impact.

This information was reported by Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. It was initially suggested that Hyman might not have to miss any regular-season action at all, but his injury has proven to be more severe than initially thought.

Despite the challenges, the Oilers are determined to make the most of the new season. With the addition of Mangiapane and Tomasek, as well as the return of some key players, the team is hopeful for a strong performance in the upcoming season.

In the meantime, fans will be keeping a close eye on Hyman's recovery and the impact of the new additions to the team. The Oilers' forward group may look different this season, but the team is confident that they have the talent to succeed.
