Yvette Young's amusing account of recording guitar music for James Gunn's Superman entails a disheartening disintegration caused by a blast.
In a recent turn of events, Yvette Young, a renowned guitarist, has contributed to the soundtrack of the highly-anticipated James Gunn-directed Superman movie. The opportunity came about when composer David Fleming reached out to Young for her unique electric guitar talents.
For about a month, Young was on retainer, receiving daily musical cues from Fleming, ranging from one to three at a time. With little time for revisions and under the pressure of a fast-paced film scoring project, Young quickly responded with her guitar recordings.
Her work involved using specific gear such as her P90 Talman guitar and various pedals including the Walrus Audio ACS1, Hologram Chroma console, Collision Devices, and Black Hole Symmetry to create different guitar tones suited for the soundtrack's mood and atmosphere. This guitar work was layered into the soundtrack alongside other musicians' contributions and the overall score.
Young's role was that of a session guitarist, specialising in electric guitar parts tailored to the composer's vision for the Superman score. The process was an exciting, highly collaborative, and precise experience with limited room for error, typical of professional film soundtrack sessions.
Reflecting on her experience, Young found it difficult to know when to stop working on the project due to its fast-paced nature. She also found it amusing that the details she spent a lot of time on were often covered by explosions in the movie, a testament to the dynamic nature of filmmaking.
This isn't the first time Young has ventured into soundtrack-adjacent work. She has composed bedtime sound baths to help emo kids go to sleep, demonstrating her versatility as a musician.
In a recent YouTube video, Young shared her experience working on the Superman movie, expressing her privilege at being trusted with little direction and being a part of such a significant project. She also shared her signature pedal with Walrus Audio, the Qi Etherealizer, and the EBow and FreqOut by DigiTech, which she used in her work on the soundtrack.
As the Superman movie hits theatres, fans can look forward to hearing Yvette Young's contributions to the electric guitar score, a testament to her talent and versatility as a musician.
