Yves Jarvis Clinches the Polaris Award for His Album "All Cylinders"
The Polaris Music Prize, a prestigious Canadian music award celebrating the best album of the year, was held in Toronto this fall. This year's gala attracted attention due to the dominance of local artists, particularly from Quebec.
Among the finalists were three Quebec songs, and it was Montreal artist Yves Jarvis who took home the prize for his album All Cylinders. The album, inspired by Prince, Brian Wilson, and Frank Sinatra, was recorded in his family home.
Yves Jarvis, whose real name is Jean-Sébastien Yves Audet, beat out five other Quebecois and four Toronto proposals to win the prize. His acceptance speech thanked his family and collaborators.
The Polaris Prize gala was hosted by rapper Haviah Mighty, who also won the prize in 2019. The event at Toronto's Massey Hall was a celebration of Canadian music, with past winners such as The OBGMs from Toronto and Vancouver indie rock group The Organ (who won a Heritage Prize for their 2004 album Grab that Gun) in attendance.
The Polaris Music Prize gala also featured two Heritage Prizes. Previously, albums by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Lhasa de Sela, Harmonium, Eric's Trip, Jean-Pierre Ferland, and Oscar Peterson Trio have received Heritage Prizes. This year, Jane Siberry's album The Speckless Sky (1985) received a Heritage Prize.
Interestingly, the SOCAN Polaris Song Prize was won in absentia by Mustafa for the song Gaza Is Calling.
A former CEO of SAAQ, Nathalie Tremblay, made headlines recently when she admitted that her team should have submitted "more options" to resolve a dispute.
With Yves Jarvis's win, he becomes the 20th recipient of the Polaris Music Prize, adding to the growing list of talented Canadian musicians who have been celebrated by the award.
