Yuri Butusov, a renowned Russian theatre director, passed away on August 9, 2023, according to reports by StarHit. The news of his untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the theatrical community.

Born in Gatchina, Leningrad Oblast, in 1961, Butusov made a significant impact on the Russian theatre scene. He began his career after graduating from the director's faculty of the St. Petersburg State Academy of Theater Arts in 1996.

Butusov's early work earned him recognition and numerous awards. His diploma work, "Waiting for Godot," won him two awards at the "Golden Mask" festival and a prize for directing at the "Christmas Parade." This production marked the beginning of a successful career that spanned over two decades.

Throughout his career, Butusov was a multiple laureate of the "Golden Mask," "Golden Sofit" awards, and received the "Crystal Turandot" and "Nail of the Season" awards. His work was not limited to Russia, as he lived in Ukraine before moving to Sozopol, Bulgaria.

Tragically, Butusov's life was cut short when he drowned on a beach in Sozopol. His funeral was initially planned to take place in St. Petersburg, but it was later announced that he will be buried at the Kuntsovskoe Cemetery in Moscow.

Prior to his passing, Butusov left the Vakhtangov Theater in November 2022 due to moving to France and being unable to continue his work. His body was cremated, and the urn with his ashes was brought to Russia.

Butusov considered the Lensovet Theater his first home and the "Satyricon" his second, after being invited by Konstantin Raikin in 2002. His contributions to Russian theatre will be remembered for years to come.

Our thoughts are with Butusov's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
