Professor Muhammad Yunus' Three-Day State Visit to Malaysia Reinforces Bilateral Ties
Professor Muhammad Yunus, the renowned Bangladeshi economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, embarked on a three-day state visit to Malaysia from August 11 to 13, 2025. The visit, marked by high-profile meetings and activities, aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia.
Upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on August 11, Yunus and his delegation were warmly welcomed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who inspected a guard of honour from the Royal Malay Regiment.
The following day, Yunus was accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya. He then held a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade and investment, labor, education, tourism, and defense, as well as regional and international developments.
During the visit, Malaysia and Bangladesh signed and exchanged multiple memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements in various sectors. The exact number of signed MoUs varies in reports, but figures range between five to eight.
Academically, Yunus received an honorary doctorate from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the national university of Malaysia, on August 13. He also delivered a commemorative lecture to students.
In addition to his official engagements, Yunus met with prominent Malaysian business figures, including Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary, a business tycoon and owner of Proton, Malaysia’s national car company, and MMC Corporation Berhad, a utility and infrastructure company. Sir Jeffrey Cheah, founder and chairman of Sunway Group, also met with Yunus at his hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
