YouTube TV Sparks Outrage Removing Univision Channels
YouTube TV has sparked controversy by removing TelevisaUnivision channels like UniMás, TUDN, and Galavisión from its service. Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., has been affected, with 59 owned and/or operated stations impacted. YouTube TV subscribers have been left without their favorite Spanish-language content.
The dispute began in early September 2023 when Google, the parent company of YouTube TV, failed to renew its contract with TelevisaUnivision. This led to the removal of Univision's local TV stations and other owned networks from the service. YouTube TV has since deleted customers' DVR recordings of Univision and other TelevisaUnivision programming.
YouTube TV has offered a $6 credit or refund to Spanish Base subscribers if the programming remains unavailable for an extended period. However, a YouTube spokesperson has stated that TelevisaUnivision represents only a tiny fraction of overall consumption on YouTube TV. This has not deterred lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) from taking notice of the situation.
The contract renewal talks between Google and TelevisaUnivision have reached an impasse, with Univision alleging discriminatory practices. Google is also in negotiations with NBCUniversal for its networks on YouTube TV. Meanwhile, YouTube TV subscribers await a resolution, hoping for the return of their beloved Spanish-language channels.
