YouTube Settles Trump Lawsuit for $24.5M
YouTube has agreed to pay a substantial sum to settle a lawsuit brought by former US President Donald Trump. The tech giant will pay US$24.5 million following Trump's 2021 account suspension on the platform.
This settlement is the latest in a series of such agreements by big tech companies with Trump. Meta Platforms and X have previously settled similar lawsuits for US$25 million and US$10 million respectively.
YouTube's payment of US$24.5 million is specifically related to the suspension of Trump's account in 2021, which occurred after the Capitol riot. The majority of this amount, US$22 million, will be contributed to the Trust for the National Mall for the construction of the White House State Ballroom. The remaining US$2.5 million will go to other plaintiffs, including the American Conservative Union.
The settlement does not constitute an admission of liability by Google, the parent company of YouTube. This marks another significant payment by a big tech company following legal action by former President Trump.
