Tightening the Reins: YouTube's New Gambling Advertising Guidelines

On March 19, 2025, YouTube's revised guidelines for gambling and sports betting advertisements emerge, following Google's lead in strengthening regulations. Here's the lowdown on these robust new rules.

Bye-Bye to Unauthorized Providers

In an effort to clean up the platform, YouTube is set to clamp down on content linked to unapproved gambling sites. This ban includes links, images, logos, and verbal redirects to sites that don't meet the local legal requirements set by YouTube and Google, hence, being uncertified.

For the Kids: Shielding Youth from Gambling Ads

Additionally, the new guidelines will encompass stricter youth protection rules. In the future, videos promoting gambling or sports betting content will be viewable exclusively by users aged 18 and above. Users will need to confirm their age in their account during login to access these videos.

Fighting the Odds: Enforcing the New Rules

Despite past challenges in enforcing new regulations on similar platforms, YouTube aims to make these changes stick. However, the enforcement process may present obstacles. For instance, the platform might struggle to address unauthorized gambling content, as was seen with fines imposed on two Dutch YouTube influencers for promoting illegal gambling providers.

Note: YouTube and Google’s new gambling advertising policies aim to clarify definitions, tighten regulations, and protect users—especially minors—from exposure to harmful content. Advertisers now require Google certification for online gambling ads. Other restrictions include displaying responsible gambling information, prohibiting guaranteed return promises, and targeting only approved countries. (15%)

The Winner Takes It All: Google’s Follow-Up Guidelines

Interestingly, Google intends to follow suit with its own gambling advertising updates, scheduled for April 14, 2025. Google plans to restrict gambling-promoting content, redefine terms like "gambling" and "gambling-promoting content," and implement new rules for social casinos and Mah-Jongg games.

Staying Ahead of the Game: Future Regulations

As of now, YouTube has not announced if these new guidelines will roll out in other countries. However, Google's new guidelines will include country-specific regulations, which could pave the way for similar updates worldwide.

Keep in Mind: Throughout these changes, YouTube and Google aim to balance growth within the sports betting industry with consumer protection and regulatory compliance. (15%)
