Fresh Take:

17-year-old Durham speedster James Minto steal the spotlight with his debut half-century today (May 17), as nightwatchman in just his fifth first-class game.

With Haseeb Hameed posting an unbeaten double-hundred for Nottinghamshire, Minto took center stage in the second day's batting, surpassing the responsibilities of a typical nightwatch. The lad, who prior to this match, averaged a modest 13.33 in four first-class outings with 40 runs, knocked off his maiden fifty just before lunch. The accolade came after mere two balls post-lunch, with Brett Hutton's delivery finding the hands of the same Hameed on the leg side.

On the pitch, Minto's prowess lies in his left-arm pace bowling, boasting a tally of 10 wickets in his brief career to date. His noteworthy achievements include a five-for for Durham against Zimbabwe A earlier this year during preseason, and figures of 3-9 in the second tour match versus the same opposition. To add to his repertoire, he also nabbed Zimbabwe Test players Ben Curran and Brian Bennett.

Stepping into the County Championship in the previous season, Minto made his presence known, snagging two wickets in his maiden appearance, batting at No.10. In his only other outing in 2024, he was moved up the order to eight. Minto's array of talents extends to his stint with England U19s in their youth 50-over series versus South Africa earlier this year, where he took three wickets across two matches.
