Despite the efforts of those who attempted to rescue him, the water pressure was too strong, and he could not be saved, despite nearly an hour of rescue efforts with first responders working in waist-deep water.
Authorities urge people to avoid playing or walking near storm drains, retention ponds, or floodwaters, as strong currents can quickly sweep individuals away or trap them in dangerous areas such as uncovered drains. It is also crucial to educate children about the dangers of floodwaters, including hidden debris, rapid currents, and concealed hazards like open drains or washed-out ground.
During heavy rain or flooding events, children should be supervised closely, and outdoor activities near waterways, storm drains, or flooded areas should be restricted. The tragedy in Mount Airy was not an isolated event, as parts of the Baltimore area received 2.5 to 4 inches of rain on Thursday, and one part of central Long Island reported more than 4 inches of rain. Power outages affected thousands of homes and businesses along the Eastern Seaboard, including nearly 5,000 in New York, 3,800 in Virginia, 2,500 in Maryland, and 2,500 in Pennsylvania. Roads and highways that had been shut down due to high water in the New York area were reopened by Friday morning, but more storms might bring flash and urban flooding to the northern mid-Atlantic and southern New England through Friday night.
In one instance, an 8-year-old boy was standing on top of a submerged SUV while a woman and toddler were trapped inside. Amtrak trains between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware, were stopped on Thursday evening due to high water over the tracks, but service was restored a few hours later.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and other local officials urged people to stay off the roads and for residents in basement apartments to move to higher locations due to expected rain through Friday afternoon. Subways and commuter rail routes in the New York area returned to normal schedules by Friday morning.
In Maryland's Washington, D.C. suburbs, there were multiple calls about cars submerged in floodwaters. Isolated areas received more, including 5 inches in Mount Airy and 6 inches in Joppatowne northeast of Baltimore.
