National Youth Conference Demands Political Reforms and Youth Empowerment in Bangladesh

The National Citizen Party's (NCP) youth wing, Jubo Shakti, recently held a "National Youth Conference" on August 12 at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital. The event, which was conducted by Jubo Shakti Member Secretary Zahedul Islam, was part of the activities celebrating International Youth Day.

The conference primarily focused on demanding political reforms, election accountability, and youth empowerment in Bangladesh. Abdul Hannan Masud, Senior Joint Chief Coordinator of NCP, spoke at the event, emphasizing the historical role youth have played in the nation's history and their significant contributions during the mass uprising. Masud noted that young people have sacrificed in the mass uprising and should not be dismissed as children.

Party chief Nahid Islam attended the event as the chief guest, while special guests included Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and Senior Joint Convenor Samantha Sharmin. Advocate Tarikul Islam presided over the event. Representatives from various political parties, including BNP and Jamaat, were also present at the conference.

The conference served as a platform for articulating political demands centered on democratic reform, youth mobilization, and national sovereignty. Key points highlighted at the conference included a call for meaningful reforms to ensure transparency and fairness in the political process, transparency in the government, media, and military, and criticism of lingering external political influences and slogans.

Controversy arose during the event regarding allegations made against the media, accusing it of maligning uprising participants and acting as a government mouthpiece. The Editors’ Council strongly rejected these claims, defending the media’s critical role in reporting on state abuses and supporting democratic movements during recent mass uprisings.

The National Youth Conference also plans to announce its youth manifesto during the conference. The event aimed to position youth as a driving force to convert the country's demographic dividend into a constructive political force, coinciding with the observation of International Youth Day.
