Firing Up the Racquets: The Odenkirchen Youth Tennis Tournament

It all started back in 1990, with the maiden edition of the Odenkirchen Youth Tennis Tournament over the Pentecost weekend. Initiated by none other than the local club, the tournament aimed to boost youth development in tennis. Owing to the advantageous timing, the event quickly struck a chord with tennis enthusiasts across Germany and beyond. Indeed, the first tournament saw over 100 applications, sadly limiting acceptances.

The young Swedish star, Marcus Svenson, clinched the Under-16 category in the inaugural year. Since then, the tournament has grown in popularity, with additional courts provided by friendly clubs, catering to up to 18 courts at a time. The highest number of participants, 278, was recorded in 1994.

The tournament's most successful player to date is Hamburg's Danny Kusel, with a stunning record of two victories, a second place, and a third-place finish in eight participations. The renowned German tennis professional, Björn Phau, featured in Odenkirchen in 1994. His career peak on the ATP Tour was at ranking 59, and he amassed over 2 million US dollars in prize money. Interestingly, one of his coaches, Robert Orlik, had made the final at the OTC in 1990. Many of the tournament's star performers have graced the Tennis Bundesliga and other prestigious leagues.

This year, the tournament is scheduled from June 8 to 10 (Pentecost weekend), welcoming girls and boys in the Under-9 to Under-16 categories. Anticipated participation from local club members, especially in the older age groups, promises a series of high-octane matches, thanks to the participants' impressive rankings.

Victors and runners-up will be rewarded with attractive gift vouchers, predominantly sponsored by the main sponsor Avision. Action will unfold daily from 10 am, stretching into the evening, with floodlights in place for when needed. Witness some top-notch tennis action at the OTC courts at Kochschulstraße 54 throughout the tournament.

Although specific details about the tournament may be elusive, if you're keen to learn more about youth tennis tournaments or similar events, you might consider contacting local sports clubs, checking event calendars, exploring social media, or reaching out to tennis associations. Good luck, and see you on the courts!
