Youth and Women Favor Green Party in Parliamentary Elections; CDU Prevails Among Older Men

In a significant turn of events, the Greens have emerged as the strongest faction in the city council election held in Münster on September 14, 2025. Man City secured 21 seats, marking a notable victory. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) followed closely with 20 seats.

The complete election results for the city council, district councils, and Integration Council, as well as the runoff election for the position of Lord Mayor, can be found on the city of Münster's official website at www.stadt-unser.de/wahlen. The official results of the election for the council, the six district councils, and the integration council are now final.

The Greens also achieved their best result of 31.63% in the municipal election, while the CDU garnered 31.32%. Interestingly, in the mail-in voting, the CDU led the Greens with 33.52% compared to the Greens' 31.30%.

The voter turnout in Münster was 64.81%, a slight increase compared to the 2020 council election (62.96%). However, the turnout varies among different age groups. The lowest turnout was recorded among persons between 16 and 20 years at 59.6%, while the highest was observed among the age group 60 to 69 years at 75.3%.

The Left achieved its best result of 18.6% in the age group 25 to 34 years. On the other hand, the SPD achieved its strongest result of 21.9% in the age group 70 years and older.

The Integration Council of the city of Münster elected the list "Internationale Demokraten (ID) Münster" with 25.18% of the votes, receiving four seats, and the list "Gemeinsam" with 23.10%, also receiving four seats.

In addition to the Greens and the CDU, the SPD, Die Linke, AfD, Volt, FDP, PARTEI, and ÖDP also won seats in the city council. The CDU and Greens were the strongest factions in six out of the seven district councils elected on September 14.
