NBA Draft Spotlight: The Youthful Ascension of Cooper Flagg to the Dallas Mavericks

Dallas Mavericks secure young NBA talent Flagg, with his age only surpassed by LeBron James at the time of his debut. - Youngest Among Players in the Game at the Time, LeBron James Standouts

Hail the Dallas Mavericks' newest addition, b-ball prodigy Cooper Flagg! This 18-year-old sensation was handpicked as the number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, marking his transition from college ball at Duke University. Intriguingly, the hype around Flagg's drafting stems from the fact that only the legendary LeBron James was younger than him among all the number-one picks in NBA history.

Playing for Duke, Flagg dominated the major statistics for his team and emerged as their top talent. With the Mavericks, he steps into the shoes previously filled by the surprise departure of Luka Doncic.

The NBA Draft consists of teams taking turns to select budding talents. The vehicle for a team's performance the previous season determines its draft position. The Mavericks defying odds by clinching the number one pick boasted a mere 1.8% probability. Flagg will now share the court with NBA heavyweight titans like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson in Dallas.

The San Antonio Spurs went for Dylan Harper as their second pick. The third pick landed with the Philadelphia 76ers, who selected VJ Edgecome. Frenchman Noa Essengue, who was absent during the crucial fifth game of the German Championship final series against FC Bayern Munich due to prioritizing the draft, ended up being selected twelfth by the Chicago Bulls. Aged 18 just like Flagg, Essengue was the second youngest player to be drafted.

Essengue's teammate, Ben Saraf, was also chosen in the first round of the draft. The Israeli passed on traveling to New York for the draft festivities and will be available tonight (8:00 PM/CEST) to play against FC Bayern Munich. The Brooklyn Nets selected him as the 26th overall pick.

I'm not gonna be able to keep up with Cooper Flagg, the young prodigy from Duke University who's just been drafted by the Dallas Mavericks, at only 18 years old, becoming the second youngest number one pick in NBA history after LeBron James.

Despite being drafted by the Mavericks, I'm still unsure if I'll see the likes of Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson on the court with me, as I'm just an average basketball fan.
