Young Women Identify Critical Locations in Kastel and Kostheim

A group of young women in Wiesbaden has shared their concerns about safety in local neighbourhoods. Together with city officials, they explored areas in Kastel and Kostheim where they often feel uneasy. Their project, My City, My Feelings, documents the places that make them anxious and suggests ways to improve them.

The young women, from Jugendpavillon Krautgärten and Kinder-, Jugend- und Stadtteilzentrum Reduit, joined Dr. Patricia Becher, Wiesbaden’s Social Affairs Commissioner, on a guided walk. They visited paths and squares they use daily but find intimidating, particularly after dark. Many described the same issues: dark corners, narrow alleys, and poorly lit spots with little foot traffic.

During the walk, the group highlighted specific problems, such as confusing building layouts and blind spots where visibility is low. They also proposed practical changes, like better lighting, open sightlines, and public spaces designed to feel welcoming without compromising security. The project aims to give young women a voice in shaping their surroundings. Their findings will now be reviewed by local authorities, including state police and public order offices. Short- and medium-term actions are expected to address the most pressing concerns. The initiative is part of a broader effort to make Kastel and Kostheim more youth-friendly and gender-sensitive. By involving young people directly, the city hopes to create safer, more inclusive public spaces.

The young women’s feedback will inform future planning and prevention measures in the area. Authorities will assess the identified locations and work on improvements, such as better lighting and clearer pathways. The project marks a step toward ensuring that public spaces meet the needs of those who use them daily.
