U21 European Football Championship: Di Salvo's Squad Takes a Thumping Victory in EM Preparation
Closure in EM Countdown: Unquestionable Triumph in the Decisive Round - Young team U21 secures an unambiguous triumph as the European Championship (EM) curtain call approaches
The German U21 national team has booked a comprehensive test match triumph, just over a week before the EURO kicks off. In a scintillating display during their training camp in Blankenhain, the German squad thrashed the RB Leipzig U19 team 8-0 (5-0). Goals were scored by Eric Martel (4th min), Paul Nebel (16th), Max Rosenfelder (27th), Brajan Gruda (30th), Nicolò Tresoldi (35th), Ansgar Knauff (52nd), and twice by Nelson Weiper (86th and 89th).
After the match, coach Antonio Di Salvo expressed his satisfaction stating, "I'm pleased no one got injured during the game. The performance was decent, and we executed many sequences we've been practicing. We scored from set-pieces, won balls under pressure, played swiftly forward, and converted these attacks into goals. Overall, I'm content with the performance."
Preparations for the ongoing U21 European Championship in the Weimar region continue until June 10. The tournament will be held in Slovakia from June 11 to 28. The German team aims to surpass their 2023 performance and reach the final this time around. Their group at EURO 2025 features Slovenia (June 12), Czech Republic (June 15), and England (June 18). The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals.
Friendly match behind closed doors
On June 10, the European Championship rehearsal is an international friendly against Finland. This contest will take place at the DFB campus in Frankfurt am Main, spectator-free. The day prior, Di Salvo will submit the official 23-man squad to UEFA.
Di Salvo chose 26 players for the training camp, with Stuttgart's U17 World Cup winner Finn Jeltsch having to depart early due to inflammation in his right thigh. Only after the Nations League will Nick Woltemade, strongly performing club colleague of Jeltsch, join the U21 squad.
