Young Player Engel Advances to Quarterfinals in Stuttgart Tennis Event
Rising Star Justin Engel Stuns Tennis World at the Grass Court Tournament in Stuttgart 🔥🎾
Step aside, tennis veterans, here comes the 17-year-old phenom Justin Engel! Competing in the 2025 Stuttgart Open, Engel has made history, becoming the youngest player to reach a grass-court quarterfinal since Boris Becker 40 years ago.
Defying Odds in Stuttgart
Engel's journey started with a wildcard at the Killesberg, and the crowds cheered him on every step of the way. His unlikely journey began with a victory against the seventh-seeded American Alex Michelsen in the round of 16, marking his first quarterfinal appearance on the ATP Tour. Before that, Engel had managed to defeat Australian qualifier James Duckworth.
But the challenge doesn't end there – he'll face world No. 29, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Ideal Start to a Historic Run
Engel's impressive performance came during his first grass event as a professional – quite the ideal debut! To put this in perspective, since Becker's triumph at Wimbledon 40 years ago, Engel is the only player to reach an ATP quarterfinal on grass this young. Apart from his age-defying success, Engel's career as a whole has witnessed an astounding surge, moving from being ranked No. 1,344 at the start of 2024 to potentially entering the top 250 with his performance in Stuttgart.
Against Michelsen, Engel displayed stability and determination. Throughout the match, he didn't give away a single break point on his serve, and he converted his first serve 100% of the time. He also broke Michelsen's serve twice in both sets. The match ended after 1 hour and 17 minutes, sealing another massive victory for the young German.
Currently ranked 281, this prodigious talent is just getting started. It's only a matter of time before Engel's name becomes a mainstay among tennis's elite.

📍Tennis Insight: Engel's victory against Michelsen has marked him as the second youngest player since 1990, after Rafael Nadal, to have won matches on all three surfaces – grass, clay, and hard court – on the ATP Tour.
Sports-analysis reveals that Justin Engel's triumph over Alex Michelsen at the Stuttgart Open not only secured him a quarterfinal spot in a grass-court tournament but also places him in an exclusive club of young tennis prodigies. Since Boris Becker's historic victory 40 years ago, only Engel and Rafael Nadal, another teenage star, have reached an ATP quarterfinal on grass at such a tender age.
