Reeling 'em In: A New Generation of Anglers Hits the Water

Young people in Bremen flocking to TikTok and eventually ends up on the beach, uncovering their captivation.

Under the cover of night, brothers Max and Tom Purnhagen stand patiently along the Ochtum's murky waters, rods in hand. Their eyes dart between the bobber on the line, the bustling airport nearby, and the dark silhouette of the bank opposite.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swept through, fishing clubs nationwide witnessed a surge in young members – an unexpected influx that includes Tom, 16, and Max, 18. Both brothers have been hooked on fishing since their childhood days spent fishing with their father at local trout ponds and watching an array of fishing shows.

The Digital Tackle Box

Young anglers today are drawn to the sport in part thanks to digital media, according to Tim Gilians, youth coordinator for the Bremen Stuhr Sportfishing Association (SFV). The lure is more about captivating videos on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms than traditional video games.

Tom, like many young fishers, takes great interest in the appearance of the catch. He enjoys watching fishermen struggle with their prizes before triumphantly displaying them, be it a giant pike or a sleek zander. It's the thrill of the chase that ultimately reels these youngsters in.

The Lure of Action and Serenity

When they're out on a body of water, Max and Tom often prefer to be on the move, actively searching for the fish instead of sitting idly by. The brothers appreciate the serenity of fishing, but the excitement of exploring new sites and landing that big catch keeps them coming back time and time again.

As for their phones, they tend to stay put, both for safety reasons – a powerful fish can easily drag the rod away – and to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of their surroundings.

The Prize Catch: A New Wave of Angling Enthusiasts

Following the trend, the SFV Bremen Stuhr boasts around 500 members, around 25 of whom are part of the youth department. Outside the city, other clubs report similar increases in youth membership, with some clubs seeing younger members join for the first time.

For Max and Tom, the reactions from their peers are mixed. Some find it cool and want to join in, while others view fishing as an unusual pastime. However, Max appreciates the peace and tranquility fishing offers, whether alone or with friends – something lost in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As the line is drawn in and the brothers chat expectantly of their next big catch, one thing is certain: fishing is captivating a new generation of anglers, one tranquil night at a time.
