In the absence of the ill goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, Hertha's Tjark Ernst is gearing up for his second U21 national team game. With Manuel Neuer's backup Jonas Urbig away with FC Bayern for the Club World Cup, Ernst is primed to seize his chance and shine.

Stepping up and maturing

U21 national coach Antonio Di Salvo admires Ernst's growth, acknowledging, "He's matured over the past year and a half. The experience at a traditional club, even when things weren't always easy, has helped him develop and improve."

Berlin's solid backup

Staying strong in the face of adversity is essential in a young goalkeeper's journey, as Ernst emphasizes, "It's crucial to earn trust and know your back is covered, even in a weaker game or with the occasional mistake."

Hertha's coach Stefan Leitl has put his faith back in Ernst, with the goalkeeper reclaiming his starting spot from Marius Gersbeck after dropping off the radar briefly. "A goalie tends to stay in once they're in—it's unique compared to field players," says Ernst, who eagerly awaits his role during the tournament.

Taking on the role with aplomb

"Every player at a tournament has the right to play, but it's important everyone also fulfills their role well," Ernst shares, mindful of the team's energy and unity. He capped his professional debut for Hertha Berlin with a Bundesliga appearance in May 2023, further elevating his coach's trust in his abilities.

With Atubolu unable to attend the final practice session in Modra, Di Salvo opted not to take any "unnecessary risks" considering Germany's quarter-final against Italy or Spain approaching on the weekend. Atubolu had produced an impressive performance in the 3-0 win against Slovenia, as well as the 4-2 victory against the Czech Republic.

The Commission, in light of the U21 National Team's situation, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of the environment, considering the team's upcoming matches in Nitra, Slovakia. Tjark Ernst, passionately discussing his football-analysis during a break from training, expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to play in the Quarter-final against Italy or Spain.

In the spirit of team unity, whilst reflecting on his maturity and performance during professional games with Hertha BSC, Ernst recognizes the importance of striking a balance between allowing every player to participate and ensuring they fulfill their roles diligently for a successful tournament run.
