In the heart of Kathmandu, Nepal, the city witnessed a series of violent demonstrations in September 2025. The unrest, which lasted for several days, was the deadliest in several decades, resulting in the deaths of 73 people and leaving more than 2,100 injured.

The protests were sparked by public discontent against corruption and escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces. The demonstrations culminated in a surge towards the parliament building, causing significant damage to several public and private buildings.

Among the fatalities were three police officers and an Indian national. One of the tragic stories to emerge from the chaos was that of Mahesh Budhathoki, a protester from Kathmandu who never returned home after the demonstrations. His younger brother, Umesh Budhathoki, had been caring for their mother after her cancer diagnosis.

Inside one of the coffins in Kathmandu was Mahesh Budhathoki, a young man who had left home to protest against corruption. Umesh, now left to carry on alone, recently started working as a Pathao [ride-hailing] driver to make ends meet.

The government of ex-prime minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli was toppled due to the unrest. Oli resigned amid severe protests and violence in September 2025. The demonstrations in Kathmandu were accompanied by the wilting of marigold garlands and the display of national grief, symbolising the sorrow and anger felt by the people of Nepal.

The unrest in Nepal serves as a stark reminder of the power of public discontent and the importance of addressing corruption and other social issues in a peaceful and constructive manner. The nation now looks towards its future, seeking healing, justice, and a brighter tomorrow.
