Young Americans are increasingly embracing a political ideology labeled as 'pop Marxism,' with a significant 62% of the youth expressing interest.
In the political landscape of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, a progressive mayoral candidate, has made headlines with his pledge of numerous freebies and calls for "seizing the means of production." Mamdani, a known disciple of Sen. Bernie Sanders, is a 2026 mayoral candidate known for his left-wing ideas focused on social justice and economic equality.
However, Mamdani's ideology has raised concerns among some, with Dr. Eric Patterson, president and CEO of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, warning of the dangers of such populist ideologies. Patterson refers to the ideology as "pop Marxism," a shallow and popular movement that presents as novel and exciting, but with a populist call for costless gratification and attacks on the status quo.
The rise of pop Marxism among young Americans is particularly concerning, according to Patterson. Schools and universities, considered epicenters of indoctrination in this ideology, have seen a significant shift in the curriculum, with history being viewed through a neo-Marxist lens of oppressor vs. oppressed. This revisionist education, combined with inappropriate guilt, has led many young people to embrace Marxism, despite its bloody history.
In a survey earlier this year, 62% of young Americans expressed a positive view of "socialism," an ideology that has resulted in the murder of 100 million people at the hands of various leaders. This support for socialism is particularly alarming, given its end goal: the unaccountable, indomitable administrative state taking control of all aspects of economic life, followed by totalitarian control over not just where you go and what you do, but what you think and believe.
The irony lies in the fact that these young people, who hold anti-institutional views and a gross sense of entitlement, are calling for a revolution against corporations and government institutions, yet demand a subsidized first-world lifestyle. They want benefits without work and security without responsibility, equating equality with free health care, free college, free transportation, and guaranteed incomes.
In contrast, today's silent majority of young adults is far less political, being concerned with earning an education, starting a family, and responsibly paying their way. As the 2026 election year approaches and the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, it is an appropriate time to be grateful for blessings, tell the truth about American history, recommit to founding principles of ordered liberty, and confront the lies of communism.
Losing a majority of young Americans to pop Marxism is not just unacceptable, it is dangerous, as pop Marxism's leaders are rabidly political, and their young followers can get caught up in the destructive idealism of the moment. As the mayoral race in New York City heats up, it is crucial to remain informed and vigilant about the ideologies and agendas of the candidates.
