Potential mail arrivals from the State Criminal Office are imminent - You may soon receive correspondence from your regional criminal police, allegedly due to undisclosed reasons.

Ever wonder how safe the streets of Lower Saxony really are? The State Criminal Office is about to give you a dose of reality with their latest initiative, the Dark Field Study, kicking off now. Buckle up, 'cause 40,000 Lower Saxony residents aged 16 and over will be receiving mail from the State Criminal Office. What's in the mail, you ask? Well, questions about their experiences with—you guessed it—sexual harassment.

Since 2013, the State Criminal Office (LKA) has been conducting these surveys every two years to shed light on crimes that go unreported. Sure, many of us feel safe and sound in the state, but don't be so quick to dismiss potential hazards.

The last survey results, unveiled last year, showed that 9.4% of respondents felt the risk of crime victimization was relatively high, compared to 6.0% in 2021. But fear not, the majority (90.5%) still considered the risk to be low.

With participation rates of up to 40%, these surveys have been quite popular. Alexander Gluba, head of the study, aims to keep that streak intact. He says, "We want to continue achieving such participation rates, allowing us to draw solid conclusions for the police in Lower Saxony based on as many responses as possible."

In short, this survey ain't no secret, and your answers could help the police develop and adapt prevention measures and strategies. participation is voluntary, anonymous, and, bonus points, you get five weeks to complete it.

The survey will be available online for the first time this year, as announced by the State Criminal Office. So, break out the laptop, folks!

According to Gluba, this survey is much more than just numbers—it's people's perspectives. He shared on LinkedIn that while the police criminal statistics offer valuable insights, they only depict the "bright field" of crime. The Dark Field Study aims to reveal the "dark field"—life through the lens of the population.

So, brace yourselves for three letters from the State Criminal Office of Lower Saxony: an announcement, a survey, and a thank-you/reminder. Talk about mail day!
