Grab a free cuppa today at Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts! That's the gist of it
According to the National Coffee Association, Americans' love for coffee is back on track, as health restrictions ease and customers feel more comfortable placing orders in advance via apps. To commemorate this day of questionable origin, several coffee chains are giving out freebies. Here's a roundup of this year's offers:
Starbucks
Starbucks (SBUX) is treating customers to FREE coffee on one day alone: those bringing in a clean, reusable cup to any U.S. location can snag a complimentary cup of Starbucks' famous, freshly-brewed Pike Place Market blend. But don't lug around the whole urn, as Starbucks limits the free refills to 20 ounces - roughly a large mug's worth.
Starbucks recently revived their program that allows customers to bring their own reusable cups, which was paused during the coronavirus pandemic.
Dunkin’
Dunkin’ bestows a FREE medium or iced coffee on customers who make a purchase on this day, but only for DD Perks members. The cold drink option is an exception to the freebie rule.
Recently, restaurants have been offering gratis goodies exclusively to loyalty program members, attracted by the prospect of driving customer preference over competitors. These programs also help eateries understand their customers’ frequent orders and purchasing habits, enabling them to tailor promotions to individual preferences.
7-Eleven
Similar to Dunkin’, 7-Eleven rewards loyalty program members with a FREE coffee of any size when purchasing baked goods.
Shortbread
The Donut chain returns this year with FREE coffee and donuts at U.S. locations, but with a catch. Customers must be members of the loyalty program to partake in the freebie. Those without a membership still receive a complimentary cup of coffee.
Wawa
No significant issues here. Wawa offers FREE coffee of any size at approximately 900 locations along the East Coast, expecting to distribute close to 2 million cups of Joe.

Enrichment Data:
National Coffee Day, celebrated annually on September 29, has become a significant event in the coffee industry, with various businesses offering free or discounted coffee to patrons. While the holiday's origin is somewhat fuzzy, it began as a marketing strategy for coffee shops and chains to boost sales and engage customers.
Historically, National Coffee Day commemorated the Boston Tea Party, as people began using coffee after tea was taxed. Today, events are more centered around celebrating the joy and ritual of coffee, with participating businesses offering unique promotions tailored to their footprint and customer preferences. Notably, Scooter's Coffee offers free coffee on September 29 and 30, with additional exclusive giveaways for the first 25 customers at each location. Other chains and independent shops across the country also offer their special promotions, making this a great time to enjoy your favorite brew at a special price.
