Unlocking read receipts freedom on Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger is finally adding new features, although it may have been long overdue. The service recently implemented end-to-end encryption as the standard for private chats and now, with the same update, offers the long-awaited option to deactivate read receipts. (No more needing to enable flight mode every time you want a quick peek at a message.) Additionally, Messenger allows users to edit messages now.

So, how to deactivate read receipts on Facebook Messenger

Allow us to first discuss the essential aspect: the opportunity to deactivate read receipts serves as a significant improvement for your privacy. Now, you can enjoy using the Messenger app to chat with people without the additional stress of knowing whether your messages have been read or not, which can be uncomfortable or, in cases of online harassment, even a real concern.

You can now deactivate read receipts for individual chats or until your preferences for all contacts. This means others won't know when you open or read their messages. The downside? You won't know when a message you sent is read if you disable the feature on your account. However, many people will be able to live with that, and eventually disable the feature altogether.

To deactivate read receipts for all contacts:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Read Receipts.
  2. Toggle off Read Receipts.

To deactivate read receipts for a specific conversation:

  1. Tap on the contact's name at the top of the chat window.
  2. Go to Notifications.
  3. Toggle off Read Receipts.

Edit away in Facebook Messenger

Messenger also leans on the iPhone's native Messaging App and WhatsApp for their functionality; now, you can edit any message within 15 minutes after sending it. You have 15 minutes to edit your message as many times as you'd like, and there won't be a visible edit history, so nobody can see what was changed.

This works in both the app and the web. To edit the message in the app, tap on the message, hold it, and then select Edit. In the web version, click on the three dots next to the message you want to edit and select Edit.

After making the changes, an asterisk will appear next to the message to indicate that it has been edited. However, others won't be able to see what was originally written. Keep in mind that Meta keeps a copy of the message on their servers. If someone misuses this by committing abuse, you will still have the proper means to report it.
