Yerevan deems $7 million expenditure for Jennifer Lopez's performance to be warranted
In the heart of Armenia's capital, Yerevan, preparations are underway for an upcoming concert by American singer Jennifer Lopez. The event, organised by the Armenian government, is estimated to cost $7 million, a figure that has sparked debate domestically about appropriateness and priority.
According to reports by RIA Novosti, Arman Pambukhchyan, the vice-mayor of Yerevan, defends the allocation of such a large sum for the concert. Pambukhchyan claims that the government's expenditure on the concert will be justified given the number of guests and their average expenses. He believes that more than 15,000 foreigners will attend the concert, each expected to bring at least $500 to the country. This, he argues, will result in a total expected foreign currency inflow of approximately $7.5 million.
The justification for the concert's cost, as stated by Pambukhchyan, is based on the foreign currency that will be brought into the country by the attendees. The government appears to view the concert as a means to enhance Armenia’s cultural profile and attract foreign tourists, underscoring the potential long-term benefits to the national image.
However, the appropriateness of funding a foreign pop star’s concert under a budget supposedly meant to support music and arts on a “national basis” has been questioned. Critics highlight large individual expenses such as $37,000 for Lopez's meals, $185,000 for hotel costs, and a $2.6 million payment to Lopez for her performance, raising questions about the scale and transparency of spending.
The concert is scheduled to take place in Yerevan, and the Armenian government believes it will positively impact Armenia’s recognition and international image. Despite ticket sales, the state will cover the full concert cost, essentially treating the event as a public cultural investment. The government argues that this investment could lead to increased foreign tourism and a boost to Armenia’s international image.
The debate remains over whether this use of funds is justified given Armenia’s economic and political challenges. While some see the concert as a step towards cultural and tourism development, others question the priority of such an expense in a country facing significant economic and political challenges.
