Yemen's Hodeidah Port Bombed by Israel; Houthi Rebels Respond with Missile Attacks
In a dramatic turn of events, the Israeli army announced airstrikes on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah on Tuesday, targeting what they described as Houthi military infrastructure used for weapons smuggling and attacks on Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes aimed to disrupt the alleged terrorist activities and weapons imports from Iran by the Houthi regime.
The airstrikes hit key facilities at the port, including docks and storage areas. However, no immediate casualties were confirmed by either side following the attacks. The strikes caused temporary disruptions to port operations, raising concerns among the UN and aid agencies, as Hodeidah handles 80% of Yemen's food imports.
In response to the airstrikes, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that Houthi air defences, equipped with domestically produced surface-to-air missiles, engaged Israeli jets for approximately 30 minutes. Saree also warned that Israel would face "escalated operations" against its ports and cities in response to the airstrikes.
Last week, a Houthi drone strike breached Israeli air defences and damaged Ramon Airport in southern Israel, injuring one person. In the immediate aftermath, sirens sounded across central Israel as the Houthis launched two ballistic missiles in retaliation. Both missiles were intercepted by Israeli defenses without causing damage or injuries.
Saree made these statements in a televised address, further escalating the tensions. The attacks come amid escalating proxy tensions tied to the Israel-Gaza conflict. It is unclear at this time what the next steps will be in this ongoing conflict.
The Israeli warplanes conducted 12 airstrikes on Hodeidah, marking a significant escalation in the region. The Houthi rebels, however, demonstrated their resilience and capacity to respond to such attacks, engaging Israeli jets for a prolonged period. The situation remains fluid, and both sides appear resolved to defend their interests.
