Yemen airport attack prompts Israel to retaliate - Yemen airport attack prompts Israeli retaliation

In the wake of a rocket attack that caused damage close to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport, Israel's military retaliated by striking Houthi positions in Yemen. Approximately 20 fighter jets reportedly ravaged around 30 targets, according to Israel's military statement. An unfortunate incident at a cement factory in the eastern city of Bajil resulted in the loss of two lives and injured 42 as per the health ministry controlled by the Houthis.

The Houthi militia launched a rocket towards Israel's Ben Gurion Airport on a Sunday, following which Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, issued a stern threat to "respond sevenfold." The Houthis reciprocated by pledging to persist in disturbing Israeli air traffic.

Israel's military stated that the struck infrastructure generated substantial revenue for the Houthi group. The port of Hodeida in the west of Yemen is primarily utilized for transporting Iranian weapons, and the eastward city's cement factory, serving military infrastructure, was also targeted. These attacks were retaliatory against repeated rocket and drone attacks by the Yemeni militia on Israeli territory.

Coverage: Strikes by Israel and Potential USA Participation

The news website "ynet" reported that this large-scale evening attack was orchestrated in coordination with the USA. On the other hand, the Houthi-affiliated TV channel Al-Masirah reported attacks by both Israel and the USA on Hodeida's port. The attacked cement factory is found approximately 50 kilometers east of Hodeida, in the city of Bajil. The health ministry responsibilities also mentioned an Israeli-American bombardment here.

Witnesses in Bajil informed dpa that the city shook forcefully due to several explosions. Plumes of smoke rose from the factory, with ambulances making their way towards it.

A militia spokesperson predicted that the Israeli attacks will induce the Houthis to "broaden the scope of targets" in Israel. They went on to compare Israel's strength to that of a spider's web.

Ten-Year Civil War in Yemen

For several months, the US military has been targeting the Houthi militia in Yemen, with the aim of safeguarding international shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis regularly attack commercial and military ships there and seek to end these attacks only when the conflict between Israel and Hamas, supported by Iran, comes to an end. Israel's military had abstained from striking any targets in Yemen for approximately four months prior to this latest response.

Yemen has been mired in a civil war for a decade, with the country effectively split. The Iran-backed Houthi militia controls substantial territories in the north, including the capital Sanaa and the port city of Hodeida, while the internationally recognized government controls the south.

  • The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, particularly in the context of the Middle East and military conflicts, such as the ongoing ten-year civil war in Yemen.
  • Aviv, an eyewitness in the city of Bajil, described scenes of a forceful city shaking and plumes of smoke rising from a cement factory, which was targeted in the coordinated attack by Israel and potentially the USA.
  • Amidst reports of Israeli attacks on Hodeida's port, where Iranian weapons are primarily transported, and the city of Bajil's cement factory, which serves military infrastructure, there are concerns that these actions could disrupt the politics and general news, potentially escalating war-and-conflicts in the region.
  • As Israel responds to a rocket attack from the Houthi militia near Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport with strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, including Hodeida and Bajil, debates on the protection of workers from ionizing radiation become even more crucial in the context of the Middle East's military landscape.
