Yekaterinburg's tourism tax exceeds expectations in first year
Yekaterinburg introduced a tourism tax on 1 January 2025 to boost local funding. The new levy applies to overnight stays, with accommodation providers responsible for collecting and paying the fee. By the end of its first year, the tax generated far more revenue than expected. The tax is set at 1% of the room rate, with a minimum daily charge of 100 rubles. Unlike many similar schemes, guests do not pay directly—instead, hotels and other lodging providers transfer the amount to the city budget.
Over 2025, the tax brought in 144 million rubles, surpassing the initial forecast of 98 million. Officials have already earmarked the funds for cultural festivals, sports competitions, and tourism promotion. The rate is also scheduled to rise gradually each year, eventually reaching 5%.
The scheme's early success has provided extra resources for Yekaterinburg's events and marketing efforts. With revenue exceeding projections, the city now has more flexibility in funding local attractions. The tax rate will continue to climb annually, potentially increasing future collections.
