Yekaterinburg's ice rink closes early as warm weather melts the season short

Yekaterinburg's outdoor ice skating rink will shut down a day earlier than planned. Rising temperatures have forced officials to close the attraction on Sunday, March 15, instead of the original date of March 16. The unseasonably warm weather has made the ice unsafe for skaters.

The decision comes as forecasts predict a high of +7°C (+45°F) on Sunday. These conditions will accelerate melting, making skating impossible. The city's 17-metre ice slide will also close on the same day.

Next week, temperatures are expected to stay around +6°C (+43°F). No historical or cultural reasons influenced the early closure—only the weather. Skaters had today as their final chance to use the rink before it shuts for the season.

The rink's early closure leaves visitors with one less winter attraction. With no plans for an extension, the city's outdoor skating season has now officially ended. Officials have not announced any alternative activities to replace the rink.
