Yekaterinburg Imposes Speed Limits on Trams and Trolleybuses

Yekaterinburg freezes under –29°C as winter shuts down city life

The city's transport department has capped tram speeds at 25 km/h (15.5 mph) and trolleybuses at 35 km/h (21.7 mph) to prevent damage to infrastructure amid extreme cold.

Temperatures in Yekaterinburg have plunged to –29°C (–20°F), though forecasters expect a warming trend to begin tomorrow, January 15.

In December 2025, the city's outdoor ice rink, Skating Rink on the Square, was forced to close shortly after opening due to the cold snap. The freezing temperatures also shut down rides in Mayakovsky Park, including a giant slide.
